Responsible for the installation of the combined CATV and telephony cable network in Glasgow to meet DTI and internal performance targets.

o             Manage the activities of contractors to ensure that  the network installation meets the             timescales and budget while meeting the requirements of the Standard Operating Procedures and statuary requirements such as NRSWA, H&S and wiring regulations .

o             Manage  Planning , Inspection and Commissioning staff.

o             Achieved the installation, splicing and commissioning of over 4,500 km of telephony and coaxial cable and 800 km of fibre optic cable over a 30 month period.

o          Prepare and  present progress and management reports.

o          Prepare budgets, authorise and monitor expenditure.

o             Recruitment and development of staff necessary for the growth of the commissioning activity.

o          Provide technical support on design issues and solutions to technical problems.

Managed a multi-disciplined group of specialist engineering staff encompassing equipment installation, electrical system design and maintenance, building maintenance, computing services and transmission maintenance support. 

o          Planned and co-ordinated regional installation and service enhancement projects on high power VHF radio and UHF television transmission equipment, such as Classic FM transmitter network and NICAM stereo sound on TV network, to meet customer's programme start date and project budget.

o          Co-ordinated regional re-engineering projects on high power UHF TV transmitters to ensure minimum disruption to service and smooth handover between sub-contractors.

o             Specified equipment requirements and technical performance of video audio and R.F. equipment used in broadcast applications.

o             Provided technical support for new equipment and new business areas such as:

            PMR including TACS, GSM and trunked mobile radio systems; digital and analogue microwave communication networks. Organised seminars to assist maintenance staff to consolidate their knowledge of mobile and digital communications systems.

o             Prepared and controlled annual operating budget, including the national test equipment budget, to achieve set financial targets.

o             Selected, deployed and developed staff to achieve a cost effective structure. Set performance objectives and carried out staff appraisals.

o          Liaised with customers and assisted sales force on technical and manpower requirements associated with the preparation of bids and quotations.

o             Experienced in working to BS5750 requirements.

o             Supervised the operation of TV and radio broadcast transmitter networks.   Ensuring that faults are passed to maintenance staff and recording procedures are carried out.

o          Liaison with utility companies to ensure that faults are resolved.

o             Supervised and carried out corrective and preventive maintenance of a broad range of electronic equipment.

o             Guidance and development of junior staff.

o             Seconded for 6 months to Technical Training Centre (April - October 1986), to teach trainees and engineering staff theoretical and practical aspects of   technical equipment.

o             Conversant with video, audio, RF and digital measurement techniques and fault analysis techniques.
